SAKHUJA SPRING 2011 MINI SHOW AND SHOE SHOPPING PARTY AT TOWN SHOES!

On May 29th I was lucky to host a mini show and shoe shopping party at Town Shoes on Bay and Bloor in Toronto. This event was graciously supported with gift bags by Calvin Klein, Schwarzkopf, and Townshoes.

Performances were by Jeanette Ricasio and Richie Nguyen from Sonant Alchemy.

WHY I HAVEN'T BEEN BLOGGING!

Things have been crazy busy and I haven't had a chance up until now to update my blog!

Here are two commissions I worked on in March:

A custom altered baby doll dress with sequin detailing, pleated silver silk draping and black silk bow for back tie.

A custom made SAKHUJA turquoise corset top with 50's flow shirt and hand-sewn gold detail trim.

ANOKHI GALA & VIKRAM PHANDIS FASHION SHOW

On February 4th, 2011 I attended Anokhi Magazine's Sexy and Successful Awards and Gala where i also got to see the Vikram Phandis Fashion show. It was not a night to be missed! Anokhi always puts on the most glamorous events! Everything was top notch and this was a first time in a long time where I got to wear my own dress design!

VIKRAM PHANDIS SHOW

Vikram Phandis blew my mind with his collection at the gala, it had a hint of Tibetan, African and South Indian influence from his cuts, silhouettes, and colours. I LOVED the men's pieces where traditional long Indian dress coats were transformed into long blazers with a Tibetan touch. Supermodel Azura was his show-stopper for the finale piece wearing a beautifully embroidered colourful wedding gown. Overall, this man knows how to leave you speechless!

GEMINI AWARDS

My beautiful and dear friend Melinda Shankar who is an actress on "Degrassi - The Next Generation" and "How to be Indie" got nominated for a Gemini Award! It was an honour when she asked me to produce a dress for the occasion. So I made her a custom made Sakhuja Mermaid Gown with hand-sewn emerald metallic fish sequins and black chiffon rose trim detailing.

"ZOMBIE WALK: THE RUNWAY"

On Tuesday October 26th, 2010 I was lucky enough to participate in another charity fashion show called "Zombie Walk: The Runway" held at the Berkeley Church benefiting The Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada. This show was organized by Meghan Erin and Maegan Mcwade showcasing very talented designers from Ryerson University. This was the first Zombie Fashion Show ever to be held in Toronto, It was very cool to see my spring summer designs which were inspired by graceful Kathakali dancers to be turned into zombies! What a night!!

"...AND IT TASTED LIKE BITTER ALMONDS"

This past summer/fall i had teamed up with the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre / Multicultural Women Against Rape to organize a charity fashion show with the launch of my spring 2011 collection at the Thrush Holmes Empire Art Gallery. I cannot tell you enough how great the centre has been for our community over the last 30 years, and how hard working and dedicated the women are that work and volunteer there. They have helped me through so much, that i really wanted to give back. What made the event so wonderful was all the support we received from our community and how our diversity and talent shined. We are what makes Toronto so great!
I just want to thank everybody that helped out, attended, and gave us your support. Thank you.
